You can singly use the plate with a hand grip strap for better protection of your camera. Or you can attach the plate to the ball head with 1/4"-20 stud for quickly releasing. The anti-slip pad on the surface of the plate increases the grip between the camera and plate. It will also prevent scratches to your camera body.
